Struggling to staff production? Need to boost profitability but get stuck when issues arise? You’re not alone. More and more industrial companies are exploring how automation can bring both stability and progress. Here, Johannes Kjellgren, CEO of Wemo, shares real-world insights – and what you should consider.

When you’re considering a new automation investment, it’s usually driven by a clear need: to get more out of your resources and improve profitability. One concept that’s becoming increasingly important is machine utilisation – how much your equipment is actually producing versus how much it stands idle.

“We see that many companies operate around the clock and face challenges staffing shifts, especially at night. At the same time, it's getting harder to find people for simpler, repetitive tasks – like stacking products or performing quality checks. That’s when automation becomes the natural next step,” says Johannes Kjellgren, CEO of Wemo.

Johannes explains that companies rarely automate to cut staff. Instead, the goal is to remove monotonous tasks and free up time for work that requires skill and engagement. Businesses that invest in a stimulating work environment where employees feel involved are often more successful – both in production and in team satisfaction.

The solution: flexible technology and accessible support

If you’re investing in automation, you’re looking for a cost-effective solution that can grow with your needs. It doesn’t always have to be the biggest system from the start – sometimes a simpler setup that can be expanded later is enough.

According to Johannes, a key factor is that customers feel confident knowing help is available when needed. He explains:

“It’s not just about the technology. Trust and support after delivery are just as important. At Wemo, we offer an efficient service organisation with our own technicians and support.”

New opportunities with smart technology

Some tasks were once difficult to automate, but that’s changing fast. Thanks to rapid advancements, it’s now possible to automate workflows that previously required manual labour.

“We see a clear increase in the use of vision systems. These tools open up entirely new possibilities for automation, even in areas that were previously considered too complex,” says Johannes.

Think beyond the initial investment

When evaluating automation, it’s easy to focus on the purchase price. But a smart investment also takes other factors into account:

  • What does downtime cost your production?
  • What happens if an employee falls ill?
  • Can you cover all shifts reliably?

Automation can also lead to benefits that are harder to measure – such as increased employee motivation when tasks become more stimulating.

Cobots – right for some tasks, but not all

Collaborative robots, or cobots, have become a popular choice for many businesses. They work especially well in slower workflows and lighter handling, where humans and robots operate closely together.

But if you need higher speed or to handle larger forces, industrial robots are often the better and safer choice.

“Cobots play an important role, but safety must always come first. It’s essential to choose the solution that best fits your needs,” concludes Johannes Kjellgren.
